Cathedral Ceilings

Create a Ventilation Path:

  • Begin by installing ventilation baffles or spacers between each rafter. This ensures a clear airflow channel from the soffit to the ridge vent, preventing moisture buildup and allowing air to move freely.

Install the Radiant Barrier:

  • Staple the radiant barrier foil directly to the underside of the rafters. Make sure it’s positioned so that an air gap remains between the foil and the roofing material above.
  • Maintain at least a ¾” to 1″ space between the foil and the roof decking for optimal reflectivity and performance.

Ensure Proper Orientation:

  • The foil should face the air gap, not the insulation. It must not be in direct contact with the roof decking or any other solid material, as this would reduce its effectiveness.

Insulate Below the Foil (Optional):

  • If desired, you can add batt insulation directly beneath the radiant barrier within the rafter bays. Ensure it does not press up against the foil — maintaining that air gap is critical.

Seal and Finish:

  • Once the radiant barrier and insulation are in place, cover with your preferred interior finish (e.g., drywall or paneling). Be careful not to puncture or compress the foil during this step.
